Do you like Christmas lights?
Some of my favorite Christmas memories involve Christmas lights.
The lights on the Christmas tree. (The really big bulbed multi colored lights…some with crusty crystals on them).
Riding around with my parents and looking at lights on people’s houses.
Keeping the tradition going with Carina.
Keeping it going with the kids. (Going to Bentlyville in Duluth every year).
How about you?
God loves Christmas lights too… a very specific Christmas light:
Isaiah 9:2–7 (NASB)
2 The people who walk in darkness Will see a great light; Those who live in a dark land, The light will shine on them. 3 You shall multiply the nation, You shall increase their gladness; They will be glad in Your presence As with the gladness of harvest, As men rejoice when they divide the spoil. 4 For You shall break the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders, The rod of their oppressor, as at the battle of Midian. 5 For every boot of the booted warrior in the battle tumult, And cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire. 6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. 7 There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.

The Light of Christmas

(v. 2-3) 2 The people who walk in darkness Will see a great light; Those who live in a dark land, The light will shine on them. 3 You shall multiply the nation, You shall increase their gladness; They will be glad in Your presence As with the gladness of harvest, As men rejoice when they divide the spoil.
John 9:5 (NASB)
5 “While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.”
John 12:46 (NASB)
46 “I have come as Light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness.
2 Corinthians 4:6 (NASB)
6 For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.
Matthew 2:1–2 (NASB)
1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, 2 “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.”
Matthew 2:9–11 (NASB)
9 After hearing the king, they went their way; and the star, which they had seen in the east, went on before them until it came and stood over the place where the Child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 After coming into the house they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell to the ground and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
John 1:6–10 (NASB/ESV)
6 There came a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light. 9 There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, yet the world did not know Him.
John 3:19–21 (NASB)
19 “This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. 20 “For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 “But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.”
John 8:12 (NASB)
12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”

The Love of Christmas

(v. 6-7) 6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. 7 There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.
John 3:16–17 (NASB)
16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 17 “For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.
1 John 4:9–10 (NASB)
9 By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. 10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

The Loving Lord of Christmas!

Notice His Reign as the Loving Lord of Christmas:
(v. 7) 7 There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore.
Notice His Roles as the Loving Lord of Christmas:
(v. 6b) 6b And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
Romans 10:9–13 (NASB)
9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him; 13 for “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

The Liberation of Christmas

(v. 4-5) 4 For You shall break the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders, The rod of their oppressor, as at the battle of Midian. 5 For every boot of the booted warrior in the battle tumult, And cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire.
Luke 4:17–21 (NASB)
17 And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the book and found the place where it was written, 18The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed, 19 To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.” 20 And He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
Romans 8:2 (NASB)
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.
John 8:36 (NASB)
36 “So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.
Galatians 5:1 (NASB)
1 It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.
Galatians 5:13 (NASB)
13 For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

In Closing:

The Light of Christmas shines brightly because of the love of God sent to us at Christmas in Christ Jesus. And the light of Christmas that came into the world to bring us the love of God is also the only thing that can liberate us and set us free from the grip sin and death have on our lives.
That’s what Christmas is about.
That’s the true gift of Christmas.
I have seen may beautiful Christmas light displays, but the greatest, most beautiful, most wonderful, most precious display of light on Christmas happened a little over 2,000 years ago and it shines just as bright today as it did then.
Do you know the Christmas Light?
His name is Jesus.
Fix your eyes on the light.
Let’s pray!
